Membership Information

The Monte Cristo Preservation Association was formed in 1983 to protect the historical and environmental values of the South Fork Sauk River Valley in Snohomish County and its vicinity. In a spirit of cooperation with the surrounding National Forest land, we voluntarily maintain the Forest Service campgrounds and outhouses from Barlow Pass to Monte Cristo, the Monte Cristo Historical Tour sites, trails and public access, and the county road into the town site. Your participation in these activities is both encouraged and appreciated. MCPA is a private, non-profit organization open to those who would like to help us maintain and preserve the historical and environmental values of this century-old mining area. The MCPA currently has approximately 100 members and is a member of the League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations. The MCPA is a registered 501c(3) non profit entity.

Donations to MCPA may be made using the Membership form or using the PayPal button below. When donating using PayPal, please include your mailing address and indicate if you want the donation to apply towards the Interpretive Site fund in the PayPal note section.

Benefits of Membership

Members receive monthly newsletters (except during the winter months) which include information about trail conditions and town site accessibility as well as historical information. In addition, members can join in potluck socials and good times at work parties with other MCPA members and Forest Service personnel. At the annual membership meeting in June, we plan our coming season’s activities. As a member you are also entitled to a key to the county gate at Barlow Pass. The key will be mailed to out of area members. Because of the expense incurred in ordering the keys, there is a charge of $25.00. Your key will be stamped “Do Not Duplicate”, so please play by the rules and do not allow friends or relatives who have not signed the waiver of liability to drive past the gate.  Annual dues are $25.00 (This does not include the key fee). MCPA is a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations are deductible from your federal income tax. Upon completing the waiver of liability for both the County and MCPA, you will be given a permit to keep in your vehicle at all times when you are traveling the road. The permit allows only the signer of it to drive on the road beyond the county gate at Barlow Pass.
