The log crossing the South Fork Sauk River above Twin Bridges (m.p. 1.2) may be removed by the U.S. Forest Service in coming days as a safety measure. The exact date is unknown due to consultations between the  Forest Service and the Washington State Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.  High water has stripped the log of its bark, making foot travel across it extremely dangerous, especially when wet.  Without the log, there is no alternative route to the townsite of Monte Cristo or the trails leading from it to Glacier Basin or Silver/Twin Lakes. Fording of the river normally is not possible until later July. With the anticipated early summer area closure for the planned hazardous materials removal, you should consider other outdoor destinations this year and until the closure is lifted. Our cooperative Townsite Host program has been suspended for the same period.  We anticipate renewing it when access is resumed.
